When Christians make a faith statement about a belief in a Creator or say the lines from the Apostle's Creed: "I Believe in God, the Father Almighty, Creator of Heaven and Earth," they are making a claim about how they believe the world, as we know it, came into existence. Here are two common statements of faith:

When scientists state a belief in the theory of evolution, they are also making a claim about how they believe the world, as we know it, came into existence.

These beliefs have been the topic of many conversations and disagreements between faith and science for a long time. There are Christians and scientists who believe in both the theory of evolution and a universe created by God. But often both groups become angered when one or the other tries to prove their belief as the only way to understand how the world came into existence.

Below is a link to a video clip from a popular show "The Big Bang Theory" that demonstrates this kind of disagreement. In this clip we see a young scientist named Sheldon in a conversation with his mother who is a conservative Christian.

So why do some Christians and some scientists disagree so strongly about the claims of Creation and Evolution? To help us understand what is at the center of this issue, let’s take a look at two stories that talk about how life came to be as we know it today.  Click on the next section under this first lesson "The Two Stories," to begin.
