This website offers six lessons, divided into two sections. This overview allows you to select which lessons are most useful for your particular setting. Read more about the lesson content and the learning goals for this work.

Goals and Lesson Overview

Section One

The Apostle's Creed is centuries old and is an important faith statement for many Christians. Here the first three lessons follow the "I Believe" statements of the Apostles Creed and consider the scientific side of these understandings.

Section One: Lessons 1-3

Section Two

The last three lessons offer a Christian perspective as well as that of other faith traditions. They offer direction for conversation about topics that you might have questions about, like prayer and healing, good and evil, and ways of knowing how things work in the world.
Section Two: Lessons 4-6

CASIRAS was initially established in 1966 and is a not for profit educational and research organization.

Through its relationship with the Zygon Center for Religion and Science, and The Lutheran School of Theology, both located in Chicago, Illinois, its mission is to “provide support for the specific purposes of developing curricula, study programs, and other means of establishing the integration of scientific views of people and their world with the convictions by which people make their fundamental decisions; thereby to revitalize and universalize the long evolving wisdom and power inherent in the religious dimensions of culture” (Restated Certificate of Incorporation, Section 9 (b) (i), November 11, 2000).

Dedication

This work is dedicated to Robert Glassman, Professor of Psychology at Lake Forest College. His financial support of this work speaks to his dedication to feeding the intellects of young people. Bob, a Professor of Psychology at Lake Forest College for forty four years, worked with verve and insight to jostle and feed the intellects of young people, so that they understood what they thought and why they thought it. He continually nudged them to refine their views and reflect upon their goals.

The relationship between religion and the sciences occupied his thoughts for years. Beginning in the 1980s he participated in conversations
and colloquia on the subject hosted by Ralph Burhoe, who in1965 had founded the Center for Advanced Study in Science and Theology
(CASTS). In 2001, with endowment from Burhoe's Templeton Prize for Progress in Religion, CASTS was reorganized as the Center for Advanced Study in Religion and Science (CASIRAS), a supporting organization of the Lutheran School of Theology at Chicago; it provided important guidance and funding for the Zygon Center for Religion and Science and Zygon: Journal of Religion and Science. Bob was elected to the Board of CASIRAS and became its secretary. He served in this position until his untimely death in 2013; annually, he produced inimitable accounts of the meetings.

During his last meeting with the CASIRAS Board, Bob heard Board member Kim Eighmy describe her plan to develop an online science and
religion resource for young people. Bob generously decided to write a check to support the project. It reflected his interest in the thought of young people, in the religion and science dialogue, and in the work of CASIRAS.

The conversations that it will support will continue his care for the science and religion dialogue and keep his memory green.
